Heilbronn as a swarm city? Why not as early as 2023!

by Nadia Aleksan

Chapeau: Heilbronn takes second place in the current dynamic ranking of German cities, with only Berlin doing better. This means that the city is ideally placed to be characterized as a swarm city in the near future: According to this, young people flock like birds from their home regions and settle permanently in the respective cities. Dr. Yvonne Zajontz, Professor of Market and Media Research at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Heilbronn (DHBW), has examined Heilbronn's potential and is optimistic. Also thanks to the 42.

Swarm cities live in particular from the appeal of their universities. Added to this are aspects such as quality of life, job prospects and an image that extends beyond the region. In the last Germany-wide study, Heilbronn did not make it into the top 40. The next survey for Heilbronn is due next year. Prof. Zajontz: “The way Heilbronn has developed in recent years, it could very well be that we will rise to the Olympus of swarm cities!”

The role of the 42

42 Heilbronn can be an important factor in this, according to the scientist. Firstly, she expects the university to develop a very special flair in the city and contribute to internationalization. Secondly, 42 is already a creative driver for future projects such as the AI Innovation Park. As a foretaste, the programming school is organizing an AI festival on the Neckar from 22 to 24 July. Thirdly, the learning concept of 42 enriches the Heilbronn university landscape as a whole, says Prof. Zajontz: “From a traditional university perspective, you can learn a lot from 42. How do the students organize themselves? How do they interact with each other and why doesn't the school descend into anarchic chaos?”

Out of the black box!

In order for 42 Heilbronn to fully develop its potential, however, it needs to become even better known (more visible) in the region and anchor itself in the cityscape. Prof. Zajontz: “Of course, the 42 is a household name among companies and the scientific community and arouses curiosity. Nevertheless, it is still a 'black box' for many.” This is set to change. Through the coworking space in the style of Palo Alto's “HanaHaus” in the rooms of the school, festivals and exhibitions as well as discussion series and lectures - which are open to everyone - 42 will play an even greater role and contribute to Heilbronn becoming a swarm city.
