Dual Study Program - Bachelor’s Degree with Heilbronn University
Close to practice, innovative learning, and truly passionate coding – much is different at 42. However, there hasn't been an official university degree until now. The 42 Heilbronn has entered into a cooperation with Heilbronn University (HHN), which includes the completion of the Core Curriculum at 42 and a Bachelor's degree from HHN. This project is a milestone for the German education landscape.
Key Points: Students at 42 Heilbronn will soon be able to take courses in the Business Informatics program at HHN, thus gaining official student status. In the process, they will earn not only their 42 certificate but also a Bachelor's degree in Business Informatics. This "dual degree" can be obtained in just three and a half years – the same duration as the standard study period for Business Informatics, which includes a mandatory six-month internship analogous to 42.
Unique Offering in Germany
The dual study program offers unique opportunities. Moritz Carthaus, Head of Administration at 42 Heilbronn, states: "With the curriculum, we have truly succeeded in combining the best of both worlds: students learn the academic working skills of business informatics and the practical skills of 42." As part of the degree, nearly half of the HHN Business Informatics curriculum can be substituted with courses at 42. Ultimately, this means slightly less theory and more practice. Students at 42 can also enroll in courses in business administration or marketing. Moritz Carthaus adds: "This is particularly exciting for 42 students who are involved in the startup sector and may want to start their own companies. A dual study program is a great addition."
Official Student Status – Relevant in Some Cases
However, the importance of official student status cannot be underestimated for certain individuals. Only with this status will students from non-EU countries – who make up a significant proportion at 42 – receive a work visa for Germany after graduating from 42. Additionally, this status is a prerequisite for receiving BaFöG (Federal Training Assistance Act) funding. Moritz Carthaus mentions, "The German system is geared towards official classical educational paths – new, alternative teaching concepts need to be given more attention."
In contrast, the corporate world is a step ahead: Graduates from 42 Heilbronn usually have several outstanding job options after graduation. However, there are still employers who question candidates' qualifications if they do not have an official academic degree or recognized training.
A Win-Win-Win Situation
The new offering also provides tangible benefits for HHN. It brings new students and expertise to the university. Professor Jochen Günther, Dean of Business Informatics at HHN, says: "With this collaboration, new perspectives are entering our seminar rooms: students from 42 bring practical experience, interdisciplinary thinking, and a completely different skill set. This will greatly enrich the courses." In the future, students from Heilbronn University will also be able to study at 42.
